The Adoption Process…

Adopting a pet is more than just bringing home an animal. When you adopt, you add another member to your family. You take on another mouth to feed, another living thing to look after and care for, another responsibility. We just want to make sure that everyone in the home is prepared for this process.

When you adopt from us, we ensure that the initial care for the animal has been provided, with some exceptions. We will make the transition to your home as easy as possible. Follow up care, however, will be entirely your responsibility.

Standard Adoption Fees:

Under 1 year old: $150

1 - 3 years of age: $100

Over 3 years: $50

Our adoption fees can vary, but you will be quoted an exact price prior to finalizing any decisions. The fee can vary just due to costs of spay/neuter and any medical care in addition to the basic care that is provided prior to adopting. You can pay through PayPal, Venmo, card, or with cash. You may be required to pay a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit to ensure a home for the animal.

What is included in initial care?

Spay/Neuter (performed at approximately 12 weeks/3 pounds)

Rabies vaccine (can only be given at 12 weeks/3 pounds, so kittens younger than this cannot be adopted out)

FVRCP (feline vaccine for rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia)

Tested for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FELV (feline leukemia)

Microchip

Flea/Tick/Earmite Treatment

Dewormed

Adoption Process

Fur All Kittys is a foster- and shelter-based rescue. While many of our cats reside at our shelter in West Mifflin, most of our younger or medically fragile cats are placed in foster homes where they receive the extra love and care they need to thrive.

Step 1: Submit an Application

The adoption process begins with completing our online application. Applications are reviewed within 72 hours, and you will be assigned an adoption coordinator who will guide you through the remaining steps. Once assigned, you will receive an email detailing the next steps (keep an eye on your spam folder).

Step 2: Required Follow-Up Information

After your application is assigned, please email the following items to adopt.fur.all.kittys@gmail.com and include your application number in the subject line to help expedite the process.

  • Veterinary records for any current pets in your home

    • If you do not have recent records, please don’t be discouraged—this will be discussed during the process.

    • You may be asked about your current pet’s temperament and readiness for a new companion.

    • If you do not currently have pets, you may be asked about your past experience with animals and possibly provide previous vet information.

  • Proof of employment or income verification

    • Examples include a pay stub or routine deposit.

    • Please blur or redact any sensitive information (such as Social Security numbers or employee IDs).

  • Proof of home ownership or rental permission

    • Homeowners may provide documentation such as a county deed record, mortgage statement, or insurance document showing your name.

    • Renters must provide a copy of their lease stating that cats are permitted and noting any limits.

    • If your rental agreement is informal or does not specify pets, we may request written confirmation from your landlord.

    • College students or applicants with upcoming housing changes may be asked additional questions about future plans. In some cases, a “co-signer” may be required—someone willing to care for the cat during breaks or transitions.

Step 3: Virtual Home Visit

You will be asked to provide videos of your home as a virtual home visit. If this is not possible, an in-person visit or video call can be arranged. Your adoption coordinator will help schedule a time that works for you.

Step 4: Meet & Greet

Once the above steps are complete, you will be invited to attend a meet and greet with our available cats. All members of the household are required to attend, as it’s important that everyone—and the cat—feels comfortable.
Please note: no deposits or adoption fees will be accepted until after a successful meet and greet.

Step 5: Bringing Home Your Forever Friend

Once approved, an adoption contract must be completed and signed. You will receive a copy for your records. On adoption day, please bring a secure carrier to safely transport your new family member home. At that time, you will also be provided with all available health and medical records for your cat.

This is the final step in welcoming your new companion into their forever home—and the beginning of a wonderful lifelong bond.

Important Adoption Considerations

Cats can live 15–20 years, and adoption is a lifelong commitment. Life circumstances can change—moves, job loss, illness, or family changes—but pets depend on us for stability. We ask adopters to make thoughtful, long-term plans to ensure their cat will always be cared for, no matter what life brings.

Rescue cats often come from difficult beginnings, including neglect, unsafe environments, or surrender. These experiences can have lasting effects, and we want to ensure adopters are fully prepared for the responsibility and patience that rescue cats may require.

Once you confirm your intent to move forward, we will provide additional educational materials, including:

  • Common feline diseases and vaccines

  • Why declawing is harmful and not permitted

  • The importance of keeping cats safely indoors

  • Information on Single Kitten Syndrome

To support healthy development, we do not adopt out single kittens unless there is already a compatible cat in the home. Kittens thrive with a companion who helps them learn, socialize, and grow into confident, well-adjusted cats.
